About Borealis AI
Borealis AI, an RBC Institute for Research, is a curiosity-driven research centre dedicated to achieving state-of-the-art in machine learning. Established in 2016, with labs in Toronto, Edmonton, Waterloo, Montreal and Vancouver, Borealis AI supports open academic collaborations and teams up with world-class research centres in artificial intelligence. With a focus on ethical AI that will help communities thrive, the machine learning scientists perform fundamental and applied research in areas such as reinforcement learning, natural language processing, deep learning and unsupervised learning to solve ground-breaking problems in diverse fields.

Dr. Foteini Agrafioti, Head, Borealis AI & Chief Science Officer
Dr. Agrafioti is the Chief Science Officer at RBC and Head of Borealis AI. She is responsible for RBC’s intellectual property portfolio in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Prior to joining Borealis AI, Foteini was the Chief Innovation Officer at Architech, where she led Research and Innovation. She also founded and served as Chief Technology Officer at Nymi, a biometrics security company and maker of the Nymi wristband.
Foteini is the inventor of HeartID, the first biometric technology to authenticate users based on their unique cardiac rhythms. She is a TED speaker and serves on the editorial review boards of several scientific journals. Foteini was named “Inventor of the Year” in 2012 at the University of Toronto where she received a Doctorate in Electrical and Computer Engineering and was named one of Canada’s “Top 40 Under 40” for 2017.
Gabriel Woo, Vice President of Innovation
Gabriel is Head, Computer Ecosystem at RBC and co-founder of Borealis AI. Gabriel was previously Vice President of Solution Acceleration and Managing Director of RBC’s Enterprise Strategy group. Prior to joining RBC, Gabriel was a management consultant with McKinsey and Company in Toronto and Hong Kong, advising clients across Canada, US, UK, Greater China and southeast Asia. Gabriel has also worked at UBS Investment Bank, leading strategic change management across Asia Pacific.
Gabriel holds a M.Sc. in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University, and a B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science from University of Toronto.
